The premade sandwiches may have a sour cream dressing (or a pretty close soy imitation). Vegetarian-Friendly Restaurants: Austria, Stefanikova 25/18 (Smichov), tel: 54 98 79 - Has vegetarian options (dishes with soymeat etc), but probably nothing vegan. Inexpensive, OK food. Their onion soup contains cheese and beef broth. The next 3 restaurants are not tried. This chain is not recommended though because the food is expensive and not "biological" (i.e. comes from 'normal' farmers), and there's always a waste of packing material. Look for stores with `Bio-Laden' or `Naturkostladen' in their names, they're usually better. There are several guides of vegetarian restaurants in Germany around. You should get them in almost every `Bio-Laden'. Berlin ------ There are literally hundreds of health food stores in Berlin, especially in districts like Berlin-Kreuzberg, where the `alternative culture' is quite popular. There is a health food store or health food restaurant on every other street corner. There is also a wealth of vegetarian restaurants in Berlin. In addition Indian restaurants and pizzerias usually serve several vegetarian meals. There are numerous Indian restaurants in the center of Berlin. It might help to have a look into the Yellow Pages under the section `Gaststaetten'. Vegetarian Restaurants: Hakuin, Martin-Luther-Str. 1, 1000 Berlin 30 - Probably the most popular vegetarian restaurant in Berlin. Operated by German Buddhist monks. Buddhist atmosphere. Meals are somewhat asian and very good. Small. Expensive. Main room is non-smoking. Restaurant Thuernagel, Gneisenaustr. 57, 1000 Berlin 61 (Kreuzberg) - Inexpensive, customers are mainly young people. Restaurant/Cafe Tiago, Knesebeckstr. 15, 1000 Berlin 12 (Charlottenburg) - Inexpensive, customers are mainly students from the nearby university. Ex-`Baghwan' restaurant. Juni, 1000 Berlin 10 (ASTA-Villa, behind Math-Dept) - `Vollwertkost' and always some vegetarian dishes; customers are mainly students and people working at the university. (MU-West, Naehe Mittlerer Ring) - Viel Auswahl, sehr gutes Essen, Reservierung unverzichtbar. - Wide choice, very good food, reservation absolutely necessary. (Western Part of town, close to peripheral annular motorway.) Jahreszeiten Vollwert Restaurant, Sebastiansplatz 9 - Excellent. Good variety for vegans, just ask. I would consider the food here to be "local" food. Restaurant Stefan, Adolf-Kolping-Strasse 14, in the Alpen Hotel Tofu Restaurant, Hernstrasse 11 - Vietnamese. I think the place is completely vegan. Excellent. Keyno Vegetarishes Restaurant, Steinstrasse 42 - Very good. A fair number of vegan items on the menu. Prinz Myshkin, Hackenstrasse 2 - Good, but if you are vegan, be very explicit because they love to smother things in butter. I would consider the food here to be "local" food. Saarbrucken ----------- Natural Food Stores: Marga's Bioladen, Leitzweilerstr. 2, 06853-4423 ______________________________________________________________________ Greece ______________________________________________________________________ Athens ------ Eden, Flessa 3, in Plaka, right under Akropolis? - Vegetarian restaurant. Very nice and cheap. They have a ton of bizarre dishes. You could eat 3 meals a day there, for at least 3 weeks, and never eat the same thing twice. Goody's, fast food chain - The Mexican salad w/o dressing is vegan. Venice ------ If you cross over from the train station at the Rialto bridge, walk through the main street vendors, take a left with the major traffic (and more street vendors), and turn down the next side alley, there is a Chinese restaurant which has many vegetarian dishes, including stir-fried gnocchi, a Chinese/Italian treat that is not to be missed! ______________________________________________________________________ Netherlands ______________________________________________________________________ This is probably the only country in the world where McDonald's sells a vegetarian burger. It's called the "Groenteburger" and it's available at all of the 84 McDonald's restaurants in the Netherlands. It is supposedly made of potatoes, peas, carrots, corn, onion, and spices. Amsterdam --------- Bolhoed Healthfood Restaurant, Prinsengracht 60-62, 1015 DX Amsterdam Tel: 020-626 1803 - A very pleasant restaurant which is almost totally vegetarian. Has some vegan dishes. Open 1200-2200. Golden Globe - A bit pricey but the woman running it knows her stuff well. A good plate to try would be the burrito with sauce. EXCELLENT! Golden Temple, Utrechtsestraat 126, 1017 VT Amst - Moderately priced. Nice carrot-celery-parsley juice made freshly. Cheese in most items, few vegan alternatives. Open from 1700. Closed for lunch for renovation. Harvest, Govert Flinkstraat 251, 1073 BX Amst (this street is not shown on most maps, it is a short walk south of the Golden Temple restaurant, south of Frederikplein.) - Moderately priced. Few vegan alternatives. Open Tue-Sat 1730-2130. Vegetarische Bistro t Kombuys, Hogeweg 15, 1098 BV Amst Beit Hamazon Kosher Restaurant, Anteliersstr. 57/2, 1015 ND Amst (this street does not appear on official maps) Maastricht ---------- Terra, Brusselsestraat - Mostly vegetarian. Norwegian products are boycotted by several organisations, industries and people because of resumption of illegal whaling by Norwegians inspite of an international ban. Norway is not a good place to visit for vegetarians. I had a hard time finding vegetarian food in Trondheim both the times (in 1990 and 1993). It is difficult almost everywhere except Oslo. Oslo (Thanks to Helge Hauglin for corrections.) ---- Vegeta Vertshus, Munkedamsveien 3B, not far from the Royal Castle - Vegetarian restaurant that has vegan dishes. Uses cheese which is not vegetarian. Open Monday-Friday 1200 - 2000. There is nothing for vegans, everything is cooked in ghee including papads and they can't make anything for you specially.
